- Check the certification date. Make sure the ISO9001 certificate you see is issued after 2015, because ISO9001 certificates issued before 2015 have expired. ISO9001 certificates are usually only valid for 3 years.
- Look for the certification body seal. Since an ISO 9001 certified company is subject to external audits to ensure that its requirements are met, there should be a seal or designation from the registrar. If there is no accreditation agency mark on the document, you should doubt the validity of the document. Companies require approval and annual audits to maintain their qualifications. If you see the registrar’s name on the certificate, the easiest way to verify is to call the organization. They will be able to tell you whether they have issued this certificate and any other details about company-specific certifications.
Not all companies require ISO 9001 certification, but it does increase customer or consumer confidence. Since many companies only work with certified businesses, many companies do need certification to stay competitive and attract new business. There is no legal requirement for businesses to obtain ISO 9001 certification.
